Makeup

The Process -

Q: What makeup are you using now and what are your favorite makeup resources?

April Rose:  I'm not a makeup expert and I can barely keep up with cleaning my brushes. I learned what I do know by imitating the look of Mila Kunis on the cover of a 2010 Cosmo magazine, by getting lots of tips from the dancers around me, and by trying a new product each time until one worked. Here is a list of what I keep in my makeup bag: Tarteist Lip Paint, Too-faced Liquified Matte Lipstick, Urban Decay eyeshadow primer and Blackout eyeshadow, NYX gel liner paint pot, NYX light brown and dark purple eye shadows, Dermablend liquid foundation, Bare Minerals Mineral Veil for blending, & Cultured Pearl for highlight, Maybelline Define-a-lash mascara, and Duo dark-tone eyelash glue with fake eyelashes - and that's about all I need!

Colette: Makeup is so much fun! Before dancing and performing I never wore much make up. But it is such an important part of the whole costume that I've had to educate myself on products and techniques. When brainstorming makeup ideas, I'll search for images, usually based on color palettes, casting the net wide as I view everything from vintage looks to makeup art, collecting ideas and noting techniques. For the troupe, I usually describe the look and let the dancers pick the specific colors or products that work best for them as we all have different coloring and skin types.

Some of my current favorite products are:

Who's Who Challenge History Buffs! -

Congratulations to our history buff in November: Dido Victoria! She did research into the life of Umm Kalthoum and investigated how she impacted our dance form. We'll include her research and sources below so you can learn more about her as well! And if you didn't participate this month, join us for the next Who's Who challenge and you might get $5 off your next month of membership to Datura Online! Way to go Dido, we loved reading your answers!

Find out more about Samia Gamal!

1. Who was Samia Gamal?

"Samia Gamal was one of the most famous raqs sharqi dancers of the golden age of Egyptian film, appearing in over 50 films from the 1940s to early 1960s. Born Zeinab Khalil Ibrahim Mafouz in 1924, she was fascinated by dance and particularly inspired by the dancers on the silver screen. She escaped a difficult childhood and moved to Cairo at the age of 13, dreaming of dancing in the famous Opera Casino. At the young age of 15 she was discovered at the Gamal Cafeteria by the son of the owner, who then introduced her to Badia Masabni (renowned dancer and founding owner of Opera Casino). She was trained by Badia, who renamed her Samia Gamal (as a tribute to the man who introduced them) and gave her a well paying job as a chorus dancer. After her first solo performance ended in her being booed off stage, she became even more determined and sought out private lessons with the Lebanese choreographer Isaac Dickson. She then took back to the stage and t...

Music Theory 101: Instruments of the Takht Ensemble - The Oud

Now that we’ve covered some very basic music terminology (there will always be more terms to learn of course), let’s dive deeper into our music lessons and learn about some of the instruments you might commonly hear in your favorite classic belly dance tunes!

We’ll start by learning about the instruments of the Takht (or Takhat), which is the musical ensemble or orchestra in Middle Eastern music. Some of the instruments you might find in the Takht ensemble are the Oud, Qanun, Violin, Ney, Riq, and Darbuka. (“Takht (Music)”)

(Oud - Photo by Frank Kovalchek)

(Qanun)                                                                                  (Riq - Photo by Catrin)

                     (Ney)                                                                                                     (Darbuka)

That’s a lot of different instruments, and it’s only the beginning! Every country and region has its own special instruments and you might find that instruments have different names depending on where you travel.

So let’s tackle one instrument at a time, beginning with the Oud.

Aleppo-Music0Band.jpg

(Syrian musicians in Aleppo with an Oud, 1915)

The Oud (ud) is derived from the Arabic word for wood: al-ud (العود). It has a pear shaped wooden frame and a short neck with 11 to 13 strings and no frets, which gives it a very distinct sound. (Parfitt) You can find the Oud used in “Persian, Greek, Turkish, Byzantine, Arabia...
