In this workshop from April Rose you will learn two combinations that challenge both the brain and body. You will begin with a focus on elemental belly dance movement and move into compound layers that focus on stacking torso isolations and hipwork. You will carve space with luscious arm patterns and learn new ways to segment the body with punctuated isolations. This workshop begins with a warm up and ends with a cool down.

This workshop is a chronological breakdown of a classic choreography that reimagines dance in the Casino Badia era or 1920s Cairo. This historically inspired dance features skeletal shimmy technique, figure eights, weighted internal hip circles, balletic turns, elevated posture, and traveling undulations, all set to a Sama'i rhythm performed by George Sawa. We will move quickly through this dance so please be sure to warm up before beginning this choreography. For more difficult moves like the knee shimmy and the choo choo shimmy, please refer to April Rose's technique classes that break these down in detail. In part two of Colleena's "Heer Ranjha Choreography", you will continue to learn a choreography to the song "Vishnu Groove" by Solace, building on what you have learned in part one. In the second half of this choreography, Colleena will draw from her extensive training background in Classical and folk dances of India to bring you challenging spins, complex foot and arm patterns inspired by Indian dance, and concepts from various Indian dances including "Chamak", "Drishti", and "Griva". Belly dance movements such as hip drops and lifts, figure 8's, and soft, fluid transitions will be interwoven throughout this second half of the choreography. Please be sure that you are dancing on a safe surface for fast, flat footed turns, and make sure to warm up and cool down before and after taking this class.
In part one of Colleena's "Heer Ranjha", you will begin to learn the first half of a choreography to the song "Vishnu Groove" by Solace. Inspired by dance poses found in Indian sculpture, paintings, and Classical Dance, this part of the choreography features strong languid postures, precise hand gestures, belly dance movements including undulations and mayas, as well as intricate arm patterns. Interweaving soft transitions that carry the elegance of the Classical Indian aesthetic with punctuated earthy belly dance movement, a balance is found through layering these different movement qualities in this unique Indian Fusion Belly Dance choreography. Please be sure that you are dancing on a safe surface for fast, flat footed turns, and make sure to warm up and cool down before and after taking this class. The name of the class comes from a translation of the lyrics, which are part of the epic love tragedy Heer Ranjha written by Waris Shah in 1766.
In part two of Sadie's "Dazzling Drum Solo", we will continue to learn a choreography to an original song by percussionist Ossama Farouk, building on what we have learned in part one. This half of the choreography features some spicy Samba movements, spins, traveling footwork, shimmies, and even more intricate and complex layers and isolation patterns. This is an advanced level choreography and you are invited to try this at your own pace and have lots of fun with it. In part one of Sadie's "Dazzling Drum Solo", we will begin to learn the first half of a fun and fast drum solo choreography. This is an intermediate to advanced level choreography and you are invited to try this at your own pace and have lots of fun with it. This half of the choreography features dramatic poses, intricate layers and combinations including pelvic boxes and torso triangles, isolated movements and the "Sadie Special". A solid understanding of Middle Eastern rhythms is an essential part of any dancer's repertoire. This workshop introduces two rhythms, the Turkish Chiftetelli and the Karachi, and drills movements to highlight the prominent sounds in the rhythm. Drilling these moves will get the rhythms into your body and evoke classic musicality in your dancing. Movements from the american cabaret vocabulary are introduced for each rhythm including a box step with shoulder accents, the basic bouncy walk, barrel turn, camel with shimmy for the Turkish Chiftetelli and the karachi 5, an omi spin, and a traveling step for the Karachi rhythm. The class begins with a brief standing warm up.

Movements from Egyptian and American cabaret style belly dance will be drilled to each rhythm to create muscle memory and refine musicality.
In this spotlight Sadie will breakdown one of her signature layers, combining hip and chest movements to create a spectacular combination. In this workshop Sadie will share with you the keys to creating clean and relaxed isolations and layers. This workshop includes several challenging combinations focusing on layering movements of the chest and hips, exploration of dynamic patterns and shapes with the pelvis, hips, and chest, and creating crisp and dazzling pops and locks with accented hipwork. Sadie will breakdown the technique details and drill movements and combinations at various speeds providing opportunities for dancers of all levels to stock up on tools for their technique tool kit! This short strength training workout elaborates on one of the most effective workout postures, the Plank. It is called plank because the body is long, extended straight and solid as a plank of wood. This exercise is particularly effective because, if done correctly, nearly every muscle in the body is engaged. Listen carefully to the posture set up and keep strong engagement of your muscles, even past your challenge point, as correct, aligned posture will be key to unlocking your strength and growth.
From the profound tradition of Krishnamacharya through one of Colleena's Yoga teachers, Shrivatsa Ramaswami, Colleena will share with you a short variation on an opening sequence - Tadasana Vinyasa Krama. The movements are simply layered on top of the breath, while the mind stays in constant observation of a smooth, steady, deep Ujjayi breath. The movements are arranged in such a way that each major joint and corresponding muscles are stretched and toned. By practicing a deep Ujjayi breath, we invite vital energy (prana) and oxygen into the body and brain. While being a great way to warm up or cool down the body for dance, this practice is also a wonderful opportunity to set your intention, slow down and harness concentration. Focusing on long, deep breaths and slow movement connected to the breath, this short practice spotlights some of Colleena's favorite stretches to do before or after dancing Indian Fusion Belly Dance. The goal is to breathe deep to relax and focus on the mind, as well as release any tension created through repetitive movements in your dance training. A gentle, yet effective way to wake up nearly all the muscles of the body in a short amount of time. Every muscle in the body crosses a joint, so by focusing on slow gentle stretching of all major joints, the entire body will feel relaxed and awakened. By focusing on steady, deep, complete breaths, you will drastically increase the benefits of this practice. Joints of the body hold excess wind element so you may hear gentle cracking or popping as you start to move the joints. This is a good sign that excess wind is releasing from the body, so long as the movements are not painful. This is an ideal practice for the beginning or end of your dance training sessions. This Indian fusion belly dance combination is set on a Hindusthani (North Indian) 6 count rhythm called Dadra. It features layers of detail inspired by Classical Indian dance such as mudras, gaze and arm patterns. Concepts from Indian dance bring added layers to already beautiful fusion belly dance isolations and combinations. Find the unique quality of this 6 count rhythm and enjoy the subtle personality shift when familiar movements find a new expression to new music.
In this workshop, fundamental principles and technique of shakti style Indian fusion will be explored through complex layered movement phrases that will be broken down and drilled, so that dancers at any level can reap the benefits of carefully refining and strengthening these details. Hip movements, arm patterns, foot patterns and gaze will be combined in 3 sections: Twists & 8s, Pyramids, and Lucknow Maya, then finally strung together to create an ornate dance phrase. This is an original belly dance choreography by Zoe Jakes to the Beats Antique song "Veil of Tears", created for intermediate to advanced dancers. It includes traveling foot patterns, spins, layering sections, Fusion locking patterns, and some vintage stylization.
This workshop is a companion to Zoe's Belly Dance Flow Drill series, focusing on zil or finger cymbal patterns inspired by Jamila Salimpour. The purpose of this workshop is to move beyond mid tempo triplets and challenge dancers with unusual syncopation, fast speeds, and various zil patterns such as longa (or triplets), 337, 3513, running 7s and singles with accents. To increase the challenge and fun, dancers will do this while attempting to layer isolations and travel with different moves. A warm up is recommended before taking this class, or this class may be used in conjunction with Zoe's Belly Dance Flow Drills.
The trifecta of a strong dancer is technique, strength, and flexibility. In this Tribal Fusion belly dance workshop expect new and creative drills for your own personal practice. All aspects of movement will be touched on from inside out, from head to hips, encouraging use of breath, energy and connection. Belly Dance Flow Drills 2 follows the same format as the original flow drills with new foot and arm patterns. Vinyasa yoga is interspersed throughout this workshop to prevent injury and support endurance. The goal of the flow drills series is to impart a solid foundation of dance movement with high impact and high energy drills to develop strong, versatile dancers equipped for a variety of belly dance styles.

There is a "work" section with a detailed breakdown of the movements, a "drill" section for practice, and a "drill challenge" for an immersive experience drilling the movements from the entire level one fast format in duet and trio formations.
This 30 minute routine can be used to warm up the body before dancing or as a regular fitness routine. Each of the five exercises build strength, flexibility, and understanding in specific parts of the body that are directly applicable to your dance practice. By repeating these exercises a few times per week, you will become a stronger dancer quickly.
In this class April Rose presents three belly dance and indian fusion phrases. The basic principles of the Classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam are introduced: ardhamandala posture, several footwork patterns, or adavus, arm carriage, and hand mudras. Using these principles as a base core belly dance movements, Polynesian details, and Kalbelia Rajasthani traveling steps will be combined to create the fusion phrases which are detailed and drilled with music. The class concludes with a cool down.

Saidi is a fun and earthy folkloric dance from Upper Egypt. The saidi rhythm is one of the most popular rhythms and many raqs sharki sets include a saidi section. In this workshop Henna will breakdown the components of the Saidi rhythm and teach three distinct belly dance combinations inspired by influential belly dancers. The movements and combinations will be drilled and practiced at varying speeds with the saidi rhythm.

In this workshop, Tamalyn explores three fundamental concepts: isolations, integration and layering that are keys to elegant and expressive belly dancing. Tamalyn breaks down fundamental isolations and demonstrates how to integrate isolated movements to allow them to radiate throughout the body. Basic layering is explored and used to demonstrate how layers can be used in isolation and integration to vary your dance. You will also learn the difference between these three concepts, which is fundamental in understanding Arabic vs. American or western styles.
This workshop focuses on Tamalyn Dallal's signature hand and arm technique. In 6 parts, she will guide you through a multitude of elegant and expressive hand and arm techniques and combinations. This belly dance class features a short warm up, basic shapes and embellishments, variations on basic arm movements with layers, and hand and arms technique and movements from the silk road.
This is a footwork focused combination with folky inspiration. It features locks, hip work, spins, and traveling all with a playful style. Belly Dance Flow Drills have been created for the dedicated dancer as a means to drill almost all dance movements for a well-rounded daily practice. In this workshop Zoe will encourage a balance of strength, flexibility, and Fusion technique, utilizing sun salutations, Pilates, and good old fashioned belly dance.
