This concise shimmy practice trains the body to have impeccable timing and balance in the body. Henna will take you through several kinds of shimmies to help you find your optimal shimmy speed. All the shimmies will be put together into a condensed drill to a song that gradually speeds up in tempo, training your body to shimmy intelligently with the music and gain strong and relaxed shimmies in the upper and lower body. This class begins with a warm up and ends with a cool down.
This workshop is an exercise in playing multiple sounds on the finger cymbals as well as listening closely to the music. Henna will teach several Raqs Sharki style combinations, each using a different sound or basic pattern to compliment the character of the music. Basic foot patterns lay a foundation for movement in the body that can be changed to accommodate different levels of dancers, or different sounds in the music. We build each combination from the ground up so that dancers can layer on complexity as his/her ability improves.
In this workshop we will begin with a warm up for back and belly strength, as well as a balance challenge in relevé. We'll really turn the heat up with a detailed breakdown and drill of the choo choo shimmy. We'll add upper and lower undulations, layered with shoulder and 3/4 hip shimmy, to a ball change stepping pattern and then play with horizontal and vertical variations of the figure eight in our chest and hips, throwing in a skate turn and the syncopated hip 8 called the jewel. In the cool down we'll do some circular forward folds to bring down the heart rate.
In this spotlight from April Rose's "Effortless Elegance: Classically Inspired Fusion Technique" workshop, we learn the relaxed skeletal technique behind the powerful and seemingly effortless knee shimmy that is a signature of Egyptian style belly dance.
This raqs assaya choreography combines elements of Egyptian raqs sharki, American Cabaret, and Saidi into a dynamic and fun dance. Basic assaya technique will be used to frame or accompany earthy hips and Saidi footwork. Since we are adding a prop to belly dance movement, this choreography is best suited for dancers with a solid foundation in basic belly dance. Please be sure to warm up before starting this choreography.

This workshop details several playful raqs assaya combinations inspired by folkloric movements and made for the raqs sharki stage. Using fast cane work, beautiful frames, juicy hipwork and more, Henna will break down and drill two combinations at several different speeds to get your cane work precise, fast, and fun! This workshop begins with a warm up to prepare the body for dance.
This workshop introduces several movements for Raqs Assaya: Egyptian Cane Dance. Starting with it's folkloric roots, each combination moves a little closer to raqs sharki assaya in order to give you background for the movements and builds in complexity as we move along. We will discuss the martial art of Tahteeb, the predecessor to our modern raqs assaya, as well as several cane movements and postures that go with the lovely and earthy Saidi rhythm. This workshop begins with a warm up to prepare the body for dance. This introduction to raqs assaya will get the feeling of this fun, earthy dance into your body and get that cane swinging!
The Khaleegi rhythm is a fun, driving rhythm that is featured in belly dance compositions and performances. In this spotlight Henna will teach you movements and a combination inspired by the Cairo belly dance interpretation of the traditional Khaleegi dance, including a basic hair toss and step. This workshop introduces two rhythms, the Turkish Chiftetelli and the Karachi, and drills movements to highlight the prominent sounds in the rhythm. Drilling these moves will get the rhythms into your body and evoke classic musicality in your dancing. Movements from the american cabaret vocabulary are introduced for each rhythm including a box step with shoulder accents, the basic bouncy walk, barrel turn, camel with shimmy for the Turkish Chiftetelli and the karachi 5, an omi spin, and a traveling step for the Karachi rhythm. In this workshop Sadie will breakdown one of the most quintessential belly dance movements, the shimmy, and explore many different variations of the shimmy in different parts of the body. She will cover the basic hip shimmy and Egyptian style shimmy, pelvic shimmies, circle shimmies, twist shimmies, and the flutter, or shimmy of the belly. You will learn how to power all these shimmies with not only the legs, but also the glutes, hips, and abdomen. Sadie will teach you the basic technique of these shimmies, then add layers and traveling movements for an added challenge. The Hagallah is a common variation of the Malfuf that comes from the Egyptian folkloric dance of the bedouin of the Western desert, specifically of the Awled Ali Tribe. Steps for the Hagallah will be broken down, followed by a short combination with a few layering possibilities, as well as a short discussion of the origins and history of the Hagallah movement. Malfuf is one of the most widely used rhythms in the Middle East. In Arabic "malfuf" means "roll" which is indicative of the feeling of this rhythm. A variation on the classic hips on the down, these traveling hips on the down have a uniquely Egyptian flavor. We add a slide, a diagonal isolation in the hips, as well as pelvic locks to the back and front. This Egyptian technique workshop introduces four of the fundamental movements of classic Egyptian belly dance. You will drill some isolations and concepts unique to Egyptian style as well as some universal foot patterns and quintessentially gooey movement. At the end of the workshop, all four movements are put into a combo that can be used for practice or performance. We start with a brief warm-up before moving into the workshop.
In this belly dance basics class we will be focusing on muscular hip work. We will be working the hips on various planes to create strong lifts, drops and bumps. We will also drill interior hip circles as well as side circles. In addition to a warm up, cool down, break down and drill section, the class also includes an American Cabaret Style combination of all movements covered.
In this belly dance basics class the focus will be on very muscular internal body movements and external traveling moves. After a short full body warm-up you will learn up-to-down and down-to-up-undulations as well as down-to-up hip figure 8’s. Basic hip bumps and twists will also be layered on different foot patterns. All the movements will be combined at the end of class and drilled in an American Cabaret style combination. The class concludes with a short cool down. An excellent class for a beginning student or advanced dancer looking to keep their basics strong.
The gorgeous feminine expression of American Cabaret Style can range from light and airy to earthy and powerful. In this belly dance class we will focus on seven “classic” cabaret style movements. This class is perfect for someone just beginning to build their belly dance repertoire or for the dancer looking to fuse some authentic Arabic style into their dance. Each movement will be broken down, drilled, then put together into a combination. We will start with warm-up based on Kundalini Yoga and Qi Gong, designed to free up energy in the physical and energetic body, and we will conclude with a short cool down.
