So... You've never belly danced before, or you are a beginner level belly dancer brand new to Datura Online. Welcome!

This 4 Week course is designed to get you acquainted with a) basic movements in the main styles of belly dance and b) many of our fabulous Datura Online Teachers.

You'll finish the series knowing a little bit about a lot of things, and we hope this introduction can guide you to find whatever teacher or style is calling you most!

This program features two sessions per week: 

One session will be a full class with one of our teachers. This will be a complete class straight through, with warm up and cool down included. Each full class is from a different dancer.

The other session is our mix & match compilation of a complete practice using various segments on our site from multiple teachers. You will get a warm up, technique segment, and a cool down. Both the classes and the compilations fit into one hour time blocks.

For this program, you'll need a yoga mat, water bottle and zils.

Session 2 Hipwork and Level Changes (56:17)

Congratulations, you’ve made it to week 4! This week you’ll get a great full class from Rachel Brice. She was quintessential in developing Tribal Fusion style belly dance and Studio Datura, where most of Datura Online's classes are filmed, is her studio.

Mix and match will continue the focus on tribal fusion. Colette will get you warmed up with abdominal conditioning and Rachel will break down the body wave and teach one of her most popular moves, the Sidewinder. Cool down will be a yoga finishing practice. Amy will wrap things up by giving you a pep talk about the meaning expressed by movement and how the body speaks without making a sound.

Ab Warm Up + Conditioning: # 1

Increasing muscular control, core stabilization, and strength is the goal of this spotlight. We prepare the body to move with quick aerobic steps, then link exercises targeting the abdominal muscles, including the obliques or the the diagonal muscles of the waist and trunk. These exercises are excellent for increasing endurance while developing a strong core to support gestures with the arms and legs, resulting in abdominal definition. This belly dance spotlight is from Colette's "Beginning ATS®: Class #5".

Bodywave

The strange and beautiful bodywave is performed differently according to your belly dance style. Here, we'll focus on the Tribal and Tribal Fusion approach, drilling it as a spinal roll in the back of the body. Rachel pairs this movement with a hip circle and an undulation down to up to give it a very sinuous and smoky feel. This spotlight is from Rachel's workshop, "Sinuous and Smoky Phrases".

Sidewinder

The infamous Sidewinder! A classic figure 8 movement in the rib cage with a lateral focus; a fundamental movement for any Tribal Fusion dancer. To do this one well takes lots of practice, and continued practice at that, so get warmed up and work with this one often. This spotlight is from Rachel's workshop, "Sinuous and Smoky Phrases".

Finishing Practice for Flexibility and Relaxation

This practice will bring you from a sweaty, heart-pounding state to a relaxed, loose, open and focused presence. You can do this after a dance practice, or a long day of work. This belly dance spotlight is from Rachel's Tribal Fusion workshop: "Sinuous and Smoky Phrases".

Your Body's Language

Sigil keeps your head in the game and your imagination open with another short "peptalk" about the meaning expressed by movement, the body speaks without making a sound. This is from "Lesson 2 of Unmata's Level 1 ITS Vocabulary".

Learn Belly Dance

Hipwork and Level Changes

This simple yet challenging class uses a technique combination that focuses primarily on hip work on the up and on the down. This video is meant to be used multiple times, so it starts slowly, with attention to detail, and is then drilled with quicker and quicker pacing to challenge the beginning through intermediate dancer over the course of one to six months. It begins with a brief conditioning section to warm up your spine and joints, and ends with a relaxing yoga practice.
