Let's start at the beginning with a clear and concise breakdown of fundamental shimmy technique. Our goal for this week is to develop an understanding of the most basic shimmies used throughout every genre of belly dance.
This short spotlight will clearly break down the technique of the Egyptian style shimmy. We will hold the shimmy non-stop for five minutes with various speed and intensity. With consistent practice this drill will help you achieve a gorgeous powerful shimmy. This spotlight is from Sedona's "Super Shimmies & Shimmy Layers" workshop.
The 3/4 shimmy is used by belly dancers everywhere. In this workshop, Rachel teaches the basic approach, using hip work up, clarifies the simple rhythmic pattern that the shimmy expresses, and teaches 3/4 up variations. Some experience with belly dance is useful before taking this class, and advanced dancers may find this clarification helps their shimmies become bigger and cleaner. This spotlight is from Rachel's "Shimmy Train: 3/4 Shimmies and Variations" workshop.
Sedona will lead you through a short cool down to stretch the body and slow the heart rate after any dance practice. This spotlight is from Sedona's American Cabaret style workshop: "Goldmine #2 : Vintage Twists and Traveling Steps".
This standing warm up gets your whole body ready to dance in under 10 minutes. It focuses on warming up the abs and legs, stretching the sides, opening the chest, stabilizing the spine for back bending, and includes some yoga-based exercises to improve your balance. This belly dance spotlight is from Rachel's "Serpentine Scales: Pinball + Sugar Workshop".
In this 30 minute danceable drill and combination session, Ashley will get you moving by focusing on shimmies! You will practice shimmies as isolations, in the shoulders, hips, as flutters, 3/4 shimmies, and also with traveling steps, turns, and Tribal Fusion layers. Please make sure you warm up and cool down before and after this belly dance practice.
The 3/4 shimmy is used by belly dancers everywhere. In this workshop, Rachel will teach how to approach your 3/4 shimmy on the down, clarifies the simple rhythmic pattern that the shimmy expresses, and teaches a few 3/4 down variations. Some experience with belly dance is useful before taking this class, and advanced dancers may find this clarification helps their shimmies become bigger and cleaner. This spotlight is from Rachel's "Shimmy Train: 3/4 Shimmies and Variations" workshop.
Ashley will take you through a brief warm up designed to get the body ready for dance - focusing particularly on warming up the legs through squats and leg lifts, and the arms, through a simple arm pattern and hand floreos. This belly dance spotlight is from Ashley's "Raq It! Belly Dance Fitness Class".
This spotlight breaks down three different 3/4 shimmy variations. The first includes a hip "up” accent, the second is the “over-shimmy” (using a figure 8 in the hips), and the third is a twist and drop variation... offering the experienced dancer three distinct flavors to play with! This spotlight is from Ashley's "3/4 Shimmy Variations & Layers" workshop.
A short but sweet combo that drills ¾ shimmies with arm layers and an isolation pattern. This combination is from Sedona's "Shimmy Queen: Shimmy Layers, Variations & Combinations" workshop.
A wonderful post shimmy cool down that slows the heart rate and stretches the hips and legs. This belly dance spotlight is from Sedona's American Cabaret Style workshop: "Shimmy Queen: Shimmy Layers, Variations & Combinations".
