Intro to Datura Style Class 1: Hip MechanicsIn this Introduction to Datura Style™ Technique class, Rachel will introduce you to the basics of her personal format for belly dance, prepare you for the more challenging Datura Technique Studies, and show you how to improvise in this style as a soloist or in a group. Class # 1 focuses on hipwork on the up: hip lifts, bumps, the glute lock, and taxim. Rachel will breakdown all of these movements and then you will have the chance to dance them out in a fun improvisational drill. This series was designed to be used as a resource by anyone searching to clarify and strengthen their understanding of the fundamentals of Datura Style™ belly dance.

We are so excited to present the second of Rachel's Datura Style™ Studies: the Hip Up Study!

 Hip Up Study - Datura Style™ TechniqueHip Up Study: Datura Style™ Technique

Learning new movement takes lots of repetition, but keeping what you've earned in your body also takes frequent check ins. Datura's technique "studies" are a way to effectively practice a lot of material in a short amount of time to keep your technique clean, strong, and at your fingertips. This workshop covers all the component parts of the Hip Up study so you can learn at your own pace and review as necessary. Rachel will detail Datura Style™ fundamental hip work including hip lifts, hip bumps, swings, and more. You will learn all of these hip movements alongside essential foot patterns and arm pathways. Everything will be combined into a 10 minute Hip Up study practice to create an efficient and strong technique drill.

Datura Style Technique with Rachel Brice

Boom! We're over the moon to share this new workshop from Rachel Brice: "Datura Style Technique: Fundamental Positions and Combinations".

This workshop is for any dancer craving detail, clarity, and consistency for Tribal Fusion technique. The fundamentals of Datura Style technique, including specific foot, arm, and leg placement are covered with a concise practice and two combinations that can be used for improvisation or choreography.
The first of a series covering Datura Style, this class lays the foundation that you can return to again and again to support a strong and consistent razor-sharp practice. Enjoy!

Datura Style Technique with Rachel BriceDatura Style Technique: Fundamental Positions and Combinations

This unusual workshop is actually two classes in one: A fundamentals practice and demonstration, followed by a challenging dance portion.

1) In the first half of this workshop Rachel will detail and practice Datura's fundamental placement for the arms, legs, feet, and full body for Tribal and Tribal Fusion dancers. Next you’ll learn a short sequence that integrates these fundamentals so when practiced regularly they’ll become second nature. This detailed work was created as a reference that you can return to again and again for detail about the fundamentals.

2) In the second half of the workshop, you’ll learn 2 new challenging combinations from Datura’s emerging vocabulary, Arabic Hip Twist variation and Cherry Moon, that include many of these foot and arm positions.

Learn, clarify or refine your physical understanding of several variations of the 3/4 shimmy and their different musical timing. You'll finish with a technique combination (with some challenging choo choo shimmies thrown in) that includes all the variations and some complimentary arm movements.

This is class two in a multi-class series on finger cymbals. We'll combine many of the patterns we learned in "Zil-ionaire : An Introduction to Finger Cymbal Technique", learn some new patterns, and combine them into two combinations, the Arabic Fakeout and the Compton Shuffle. The finger cymbal patterns covered in this workshop are: "3-7-3", "7s", and alternating singles, with a review of "3-5-5".

It features laybacks, spins, level changes, and backbends all to a great Turkish song, Kadıoğlu Zeybeği by Okay Temiz. This workshop also features a performance video of the choreography. Radio Glue by Rachel BriceRadioglue: An Original Choreography

This challenging choreography is built for a soloist or any size group, would make a great opener or closer for a longer set, or could stand on its own as a single piece in a larger show. It demands a lot of strength and flexibility, and includes laybacks, drops, zippers, torso rotations, level changes, some layering and a lot of hipwork. This is a contemporary take on a style of music that is usually reserved for a traditional Turkish man's dance.

This workshop will introduce the intermediate student to two technique phrases called “scales.” These phrases can be used for improvisation or choreography, as well as being strong technique drills. They are introduced individually, then practiced together in a combination. You will drill undulations, rib cage circles, maya, side to side undulations, a simple lock pattern, and a more complex isolation pattern. The class begins and ends with a brief warm up and cool down.

Get your daily dose! These concise belly dance practices include what you need to keep your technique strong when you’re short on time: yoga, conditioning, technique drills, a short belly dance phrase called "Pinball", and a cool down. Pinball #2 has a more gentle yoga practice and focus on arms. 

Daily doses are made in pairs so you can alternate practices for an all-over conditioning over the course of several days. This practice highlights the beautiful and complex phrase: Pinball.

This simple yet challenging class uses a technique combination that focuses primarily on hip work on the up and on the down.

This video is meant to be used multiple times, so it starts slowly, with attention to detail, and is then drilled with quicker and quicker pacing to challenge the beginning through intermediate dancer over the course of one to six months. It begins with a brief conditioning section to warm up your spine and joints, and ends with a relaxing yoga practice.
