2 workshops from Sedona

Welcome to musical March! We've got two, count 'em two, new workshops chock full of rhythm and dance technique from Sedona: Spirit of the Drum: An Original Choreography and Drum Solo Expressions Class # 3: Chiftitelli!

 Spirit of the Drum: An Original ChoreographySpirit of the Drum: An Original Drum Solo by Sedona!

In this workshop you will be learning one of Sedona's original drum solo choreographies to a song created by Jason Ramirez. This choreography is fast, fun, and full of diverse belly dance techniques. It features tight pops and locks, various shimmies and shimmy layers, interesting hand, arm and head movements, plus dramatic rhythmic breakdowns. Be sure to warm up before starting this choreography and cool down afterwards.

 Drum Expressions 3: ChiftitelliDrum Solo Expressions # 3 : Chiftitelli!

In the third workshop in Sedona's "Drum Solo Expressions" series we will continue to cultivate our musicality, understanding Sedona's particular Drum Solo techniques and identifying Arabic rhythms. Sedona will explore several fundamental sounds that comprise a well executed drum solo, drilling movements and combinations to familiarize us with the sounds of the drum, with a focus on the slow and slinky Chiftitelli rhythm. Make sure to be properly warmed up before attempting this class.

This concise practice leads you through challenging drills with multiple different finger cymbal patterns while working on belly dance isolations, layering, and traveling steps. Strap those zils on tight, it's a wild ride!

This class pairs great with Zoe's most recent workshop: Vintage Inspired Combinations and Zil Compositions!

Belly Dance Flow ZilsBelly Dance Flow Zils: A Practice for Finger Cymbals 

This workshop is a companion to Zoe's Belly Dance Flow Drill series, focusing on zil or finger cymbal patterns inspired by Jamila Salimpour. The purpose of this workshop is to move beyond mid tempo triplets and challenge dancers with unusual syncopation, fast speeds, and various zil patterns such as longa (or triplets), 337, 3513, running 7s and singles with accents. To increase the challenge and fun, dancers will do this while attempting to layer isolations and travel with different moves. A warm up is recommended before taking this class, or this class may be used in conjunction with Zoe's Belly Dance Flow Drills.

Drill Bits: Bump It!
Drill Bits: Twist It!

In these 30 minute sessions you'll dance through lean drill and combination session focusing on a specific body region in each class. Twist It covers various hip twists, Bump It focuses on different hip locks and bumps and of course an assortment of shimmies are covered in Shake It! Enjoy!

In this 30 minute danceable drill and combination session, Ashley will lead you through a practice focused on twists. You will work on twists as isolations, locks, with traveling steps, turns, and layers. Please make sure you warm up and cool down before and after this practice.

In this 30 minute danceable drill and combination session, Ashley will get you moving by focusing on shimmies! Vintage Inspired Combinations with Finger Cymbals

Presenting the newest class from Zoe Jakes: Vintage Inspired Combinations and Zil Compositions!

Four vintage inspired belly dance combinations are taught that can be done with or without challenging finger cymbal compositions. Everything in the workshop is broken down and drilled, including on-screen notation for finger cymbal pattern reference.

Vintage Inspired Combinations with Finger CymbalsVintage Inspired Combinations and Zil Compositions

This workshop showcases four vintage inspired combinations that can be done with or without finger cymbals, inspired by the vintage belly dance of the west coast tribal lineage of Jamila Salimpour and Katarina Burda. The stylization is earthy glamour: feet rooted firmly to the floor while executing more modern pops and locks, mixing juicy 70's influenced old school with cutting edge Tribal Fusion vocabulary. Zoe will detail the movement phrases, break down the finger cymbal patterns, and then put them together in a dance based drill. A warm up is strongly recommended before attempting this class.

Rachel breaks down this favorite phrase and then drills the heck out of the little slink. The Pinball scale combines undulations, rib cage circles, maya, side to side undulations, a simple lock pattern, and a more complex isolation pattern. The second class from Ashley Lopez's  conditioning "mini-series". It is designed to get the dancer moving & sweating with a few combinations that contain a variety of belly dance moves fused with steps from other styles of dance, including hula and jazz. Combo "B" works with cross over turns, level changes, and traveling hip movements for an energetic and fun workout. This video also features a short Pilates-based warm up and cool down.

This combination is from Rachel's full class. It's just the combination without the warm up or cool down, presented here for those who are short on time or want to sequence it with other classes of your choice. It was created to be used over and over for several months: it begins simply and increases tempo three times so you can work at your current speed. Cute Cardio Combo A with AshleyCute Cardio Combo "A" with Ashley

This class is the first of a "mini-series" from our resident fitness / belly dance ninja, Ashley Lopez. It is designed to get the dancer moving & sweating with a few combinations that contain a variety of belly dance moves fused with steps from other styles of dance, including hula and jazz. Combo "A" works with basic belly dance moves, travelling steps, and some arm movements for a energetic and fun workout. This video also features a short Pilates-based warm up and cool down.

Rachel Brice Online ClassUp Tempo Locks and Isolations Class

In this simple but challenging class Rachel presents a combination that includes a simple isolation pattern, hip work, a traveling step, and a bit of a theatrical ending. It was created to be used over and over for several months, so it begins simply and increases tempo three times so you can work at your current speed and level. We begin with a yoga-based conditioning sequence for the upper back, and end with support for your hips.

 

 

Belly Dance Basics with SedonaBelly Dance Basics: Egyptian, Hip Circles and Twists

Sedona's class focuses on some of the most fundamental belly dance movements. This is the perfect intro class for someone new to belly dance or a more advanced dancer looking to fine-tune the basics. In this class you will learn the Egyptian Basic, various hip circles, and hip twists. Sedona will lead you through all movements in place and then travel with them as well. Each movement is broken down, drilled, and then finally combined with complimentary movements and danced!
