New to Belly Dance? Interested in the fundamentals? This program was designed for the complete beginner or anyone interested in fundamental belly dance technique.

Never set foot into a dance studio before? Great! Our knowledgable and friendly teachers lead you through the basic moves of belly dance in a variety of belly dance styles. And in your online studio, you get to go at your own pace!

By the end of this month-long practice, you will learn how to have graceful hands and arms, how to do a belly roll, a shimmy, snake arms, and various hip and chest isolations. You'll also learn some traveling movements and combinations. Welcome to belly dance!

This program features two sessions of Datura Online classes per week. Feel free to shift it around to whichever two days work best for your schedule. You're also more than welcome to repeat classes as much as you want or supplement this program with any other classes on the site.

Each of these program sessions will run between 1 and 1.5 hours.

Henna will start off this week with a short dance warm up to get you ready to move! Sedona will then introduce you to a concept that is integral to belly dance: isolations, or moving one part of your body independently from the rest. She'll then take you through the basic belly dance undulation, a key element in belly dance. In session two of this week Tamalyn will teach you how to get wonderful, relaxed hip shimmies, and then Zoe will take you straight to the point with belly rolls!

This short warm up will prepare the body for dance and is perfect for all levels. This is a spotlight from Henna's "Classic Egyptian #3: Technique Workshop".

Basic Isolations

In this spotlight we will break down and drill all of the basic, head, chest, hip, and shoulder isolations. This is wonderful for anyone new to belly dance or the more advanced dancer looking to keep their isolation technique sharp and strong. This brief class provides tips and techniques for working on drilling your undulations for greater clarity and ease of execution. This spotlight is from Sedona's "Bold and Beautiful Hip Movements" class.

Cool Down

This brief cool down is wonderful to do after an extended shimmy session or any vigorous belly dance practice. This spotlight is from Sedona's "Super Shimmies & Shimmy Layers" workshop.

Warm Up for the Lower Body

This warm-up will prepare the whole body for movement and focus on the lower body, including conditioning for the legs and feet. This exercise is appropriate for beginner dancers to advanced dancers wanting to develop strength in their lower body.
